PROBLEM:

Project Management Culture

NOW is built to counter the current culture of project management systems where management teams are forced to create processes that fit work into these neat little boxes that can be cut, measured, tracked and distributed.

The issues is work doesn't work that way.

Problems don't look all look the same, and certainly not to each person involved.

Why Agile failed us...

At the heart of the problem is how "we" (people) communicate.

We communicate best collaboratively, engaged in conversation with a few people at most.

The problem with tools like Jira, Trello, Asana, and others is lively conversation doesn't fit into their structure. They are built to break down and track individual moving parts. Conversations don't fit that mold.

So teams looks for ways to supplement their tools with Slack, emails, confluence, and other documentation sources which fragments information and doesn't provide a clear, linear narrative for people to follow and understand.

So we compensate by over-communicating. We meet, we stand-up, we sprint, we plan, we review, we retro, we meet again.

We get to a place where a two week sprint leaves us with about 5 days of actual heads down time.

You describe what you need to do, and what you'll need to do it.

At the end of the day, a recap is created, and a page is added to chapter of the story that is your team.

Project management never needed to be complicated. It became complicated because people had to invent reasons to use complicated tools.

Tools that were not build with understanding how we communicate. Tools that were built to show higher up numbers, at the cost of simplicity and efficiency.

Project management fails us when priorities are unclear, work is described either too vaguely or overly detailed.

When following the process becomes more important than doing the work.

When everyone involved hates working this way, but they do it anyway.

NOW exists so that companies don't have to invent new ways of working together.

To help companies avoid all the unnecessary process and complexity, and focus on figuring out & delivering what's important.
